TAIKHAR ROCK
The rock of Taikhar is located at about twenty kilometers in the northwest of Tsetserleg. 16 meters high, this granite rock is the result of the erosion of the ground. It rises, alone in the middle of the plain, and forms an unexpected landscape. It is entirely covered with inscriptions in various languages and of various times, the oldest being supposed to date from the Stone Age. One can distinguish in particular the marks of the clans, in red and black, the Uyghur writing, the Mongolian bitchig, the Tibetan alphabet as well as runic writings dating from the Turkish period of the 6th and 7th centuries.
According to tradition, this rock was placed there by Bukhbilegt, an exceptionally strong man, in order to lock up a giant snake that was terrorizing the local population.
Another legend tells that this rock is the symbol of two lovers, inevitably unhappy. The love of Tamir, a young girl of the region, and Taikhar, would have been prevented by the local lord, who wanted to marry the beautiful Tamir. The latter fled in the direction indicated today by the river. And her lover, interminably posted along the river to wait for her return, which never took place, ended up turning into a rock, camped for eternity along the river without ever being able to reach her... It is also said that if one manages to throw a stone at the top, one becomes rich... It is possible to camp in the vicinity, and three ger camps are at the foot of the rock.
