ORKHON FALLS
The Orkhon Falls are set in an improbable volcanic landscape formed 20,000 years ago. Successive irruptions have covered the valley with black volcanic rocks, which emerge in the middle of a verdant steppe. The Ulaan Tsutgalan river forms these falls as it flows into the Orkhon, carving out a verdant gorge some twenty metres deep. Large övöo are erected at the top of the cliffs and at the foot of the falls, as if to remind us how important these waterfalls are to Mongolian culture. Because of the drought, the stream's flow is often tiny, but as you travel downstream, you'll find smaller waterfalls further away. If you visit them on a rainy day, you'll see them in all their power. Either way, the surroundings are superb and the site is very pleasant.
Many nomadic families settle near the falls during the summer to benefit from the constant coolness of the area. Some nomads offer travellers room and board for a modest contribution of a few thousand tugriks.
To descend into the gorge at the foot of the waterfalls, you can either take the zip-line for a thrilling ride at a cost of 20,000 tugriks, or walk along a path along the rock walls. The walk is pleasant and offers lovely views over the gorge and the course of the river. The latter is ideal for swimming, but beware of the very cold water!
