SANGIIN KHEREM RUINS
Located to the north of the city, these are the remains of walls built during the Qing dynasty in the mid-18th century. The complex housed a Chinese garrison of about 1,500 men, active until the Manchus were expelled from the country in 1912. The compound originally covered an area of 40,000 square meters, in which there were also a few temples, traces of which have all but disappeared. Those who expect imposing walls will be disappointed, but these places testify to the complex, and often conflicting, relationship between Mongols and Chinese.
