This astonishing salt mountain reaches 300 metres in height, and is estimated to contain a reserve of around 73 million tonnes of pink salt. It would be capable of satisfying the salt needs of the whole of Asia for several years. The salt mines are open to visitors. Although they have been in operation since 1974, they have been used for over 300 years by local people, who have known of their existence for generations. They are the oldest in Mongolia and one of the few salt deposits in the world.
