The Shilin Bogd is one of the extinct volcanoes that dot the region. At an altitude of 1,778 m, this sacred mountain has a crater approximately 2 km in diameter and 200 m deep. Set in a relatively flat landscape, the volcano can be seen from up to 60 km away. Allow 30 to 40 minutes to reach the crater by foot. There is a path around the crater: respect tradition and walk clockwise! It's best to camp at the foot of the volcano to watch the sunrise: the view from the summit is splendid.
