The national holiday commemorates the declaration of independence that General Emilio Aguinaldo signed on June 12, 1898, marking the end of Spanish colonization. The national anthem and the Philippine flag were then sung and waved for the first time. Even if this date is often rediscussed (compared to July 4, 1946), June 12 remains a holiday and every year a big parade is organized in Manila as well as festivities all over the country.
