The library was completed in 1940 by Plečnik on the site of the city's largest Baroque palace, which was destroyed by the 1895 earthquake. Its design is indicative of the creativity of its author. The facade is composed of brick and stone. Inside, the black marble staircase and the suite of thirty-two columns lead to the large, luminous reading room, a temple of knowledge, and rebuilt after the war. In 1944, a plane crashed into the library.
