PLACE POGAČAR (POGAČARJEV TRG)
Open-air markets are held in the nearby squares of Pogačar and Vodnik. The old peasant women offer their harvest daily: mushrooms, seasonal dried fruits, herbal teas, herbs.
North of the square, along the Ljubljanica River, the arcades and colonnades of the Plečnikove covered market, built by Plečnik, extend from the Triple Bridge to the Dragon Bridge.
Of Baroque architecture, the Bishop's Palace (4 Ciril Metodov Trg) dating from 1512 has the most beautiful arcaded courtyard in the city. The palace served as a residence for Napoleon, the governors of the Illyrian Provinces, Marmont and Bernadotte, as well as for Tsar Alexander I during the Congress of the Holy Alliance (1821).
The priests' seminary borders the eastern side of Pogačarjev Trg (the small market). On either side of the city gate are two giants, carved by Angelo Pozzo, a master of the Baroque. Its library is a pure masterpiece. The frescoes (1721) are by Giulio Quaglio (visit by appointment).
Stolnica sv. Nikolaja, the cathedral of St. Nicholas (patron saint of sailors and fishermen), took over from a Romanesque church built in the 12th century by the boatmen and fishermen of the Ljubljanica. In 1461, the church became the seat of the diocese. It was demolished at the beginning of the 18th century, leaving room for the creativity of Andrea Pozzo, architect, painter and Jesuit.
Following Civil Metodov Trg, you will reach Mestni Trg, the entrance to the old town.
