PEACE TRAIL BETWEEN THE ALPS AND THE ADRIATIC SEA
From 1915 to 1917, the Upper Posočje, Goriška Brda and Karst regions were part of the Soča Front. Soldiers of many nationalities fought, suffered and died here. Many vestiges of this period have been preserved: trenches, fortifications, underground shelters, memorial sites, military tombs, chapels..
The "Path of Peace" was inaugurated in 2007, linking six open-air museums and the most important relics and memorial sites of the Soča front over a distance of 100 km. From 2011, it was extended and a "Peace Trail from the Alps to the Adriatic" was set up in collaboration with the local authorities of Goriška Brda, the Karst (Kras) region and, on the Italian side, with some municipalities in the neighboring Friuli Venezia Giulia region. Today, it stretches 550 km to Trieste and includes numerous open-air museums. The principle remains that of linking the regions and people of the former Soča Front and raising awareness of the values of peace and common development. The trail starts at Log pod Mangartom, passes the fort at Kluže, the open-air museums at Ravelnik and Čelo. After the village of Drežnica, the road crosses the Italian ossuary and splits in two between Kobarid and Tolmin: one branch takes us to the Kolovrat open-air museum, the other to Mrzli vrh. Both paths then lead to Nova Gorica on the Italian border.
