Affected by the earthquake of 1511, the castle has a Lutheran chapel where Jurij Dalmatin, author of the first Slovenian Bible, preached. In 1575, Herbert von Auersperg lost his life to the Turks at the battle of Budačko. He is beheaded and the inhabitants of Turjak decide to redeem the head of their lord. The huge sum of money spent allows the invader to build a mosque in Bosnia. Until 1943, this head was kept as a relic in the castle.
