MARINE NATURE RESERVE OF THE MEETING
Created in 2007, it covers an area of around 35 km2 and extends along the coast for 40 km, half of which is along the coral reef: from Cap la Houssaye (Boucan-Canot) to Roche aux Oiseaux (L'Étang-Salé les Bains). This area is home to a unique biodiversity in the French overseas territories, threatened by pollution and overfishing. Yellow beacons planted in the lagoon and at sea delimit five fully protected zones forbidden to all activities (i.e. 6% of the total surface area) and six enhanced protection zones (including areas suitable for sport fishing and scuba diving). Outside these zones, you can swim, paddle, kayak, kitesurf or explore the seabed with a mask, fins and snorkel.
The interactive map can be found at www.reservemarinereunion.fr. The site also gives invaluable advice on how to make the most of activities in the lagoon, explore without trampling, navigate without breaking, admire without disturbing... It also lists the protected species of the coral reef, some of which are best left alone (sea urchin, scorpion fish, stonefish).
Good to know: swimming and water sports are only authorized in lagoons naturally protected from sharks by the coral reef (Saint-Leu, l'Hermitage, la Saline-les-Bains, Saint-Pierre and Saint-Gilles) and in areas equipped with swimming nets (Boucan Canot and Roche Noire).
