LE GRAND BÉNARE
Le Grand Bénare is one of the island's finest viewpoints, and one of its highest peaks (2,898 m). And it has to be earned. You'll need to get up early, very early, so as not to be disturbed by the clouds. You start from the Maïdo, then walk along the Grand Bord trail, which overlooks Mafate, halfway up, with the Piton des Neiges in front of you. At the summit of Grand Bénare, a spectacular panorama awaits you: Mafate, Cilaos, the Grand Morne and the Trois Salazes. Bénare comes from the Malagasy word bénara, meaning "place where it's cold". Don't forget your fleece!
