This festival takes place on the eve of the first full moon of January and commemorates the first visit of Buddha to the island. According to two ancient texts, the Dipavamsa and the Mahavamasa, Buddha came to end a quarrel between two tribes. Buddha lectured them and the tribes made peace. The god Saman, impressed by his sermons, invited Gautama to leave his footprint on the Samanalakanda mountain. It is at the Raja Maha Vihara temple of Kelaniya that the festivities are the most spectacular and attract thousands of faithful.
