This 18-hole course is one of three major golf courses on the island, the other two being in Nuwara Eliya and Kandy. Founded in 1879, it is also the second oldest Royal Golf Club outside the UK. Originally located on the Galle Face Green, it was moved here in 1896, to what was then a model farm owned by Sir Charles Henry de Soysa, a Ceylon philanthropist. The privilege of using the term "royal" was granted to the club by King George V in 1928. The green is also home to a wide variety of bird species.
