The history of Temple Trees dates back to the early 19th century. The property first passed through the hands of several British administrators and merchants before being sold in 1856 to John Philip Green, who named it after the small temple trees that grew on the property. The house was then purchased by the British government and became the residence of the Colonial Secretary. It became the Prime Minister's residence in 1948.
