The Natural History Museum, located next to the National Museum, was established in 1986. It displays rare and endangered plants and animals endemic to Sri Lanka. The museum contains about 5,000 specimens of animals dating from the Jurassic period to the present day. The Punani Leopard is one of the main exhibits of the museum; this cat was shot at Punani in the Batticaloa District in 1924, killing 13 people and spreading terror in the area.
