Built between 1970 and 1973, this convention centre was a gift from China dedicated to S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike, Prime Minister of Ceylon from 1956 to 1959. Apart from regular exhibitions and events, such as the Motor Show or the Colombo International Book Fair, several large-scale meetings are frequently held here (e.g. the Commonwealth Meeting in 2013). It comprises two halls occupying a large part of the 4,500 square metre complex, a bank branch, a projection room, a restaurant and ancillary premises.
