Champeix with vineyards, protected and fortified in the Middle Ages, with one of the most imposing monoliths in Auvergne.
The city is nestled between the Couze and the terraced hillsides. A rich wine-growing past explains this landscape design. In the 19th century, the economic activity of Champeix is turned towards wine-growing. But the vineyards will be affected by a disease, as everywhere in France. They will not resist, this culture will stop. In the center, the winegrowers' houses are still present. Walking in Champeix, you can see the remains of a building, the Château Marchidial. In the Middle Ages, the town was protected and fortified. In the 12th century, it was even the second residence of the dolphins of Auvergne. The place was occupied by Man long before this period. As a proof, the presence of the menhir called pierre fichade or fairy stone. It is one of the most imposing monoliths of Auvergne. According to the legend, it would have been erected by fairies.
