This magnificent mosque, which can accommodate up to 3,000 worshippers, was erected at the very spot where Arab merchants used to come to trade spices with the locals. According to some sources, its origins date back to 920 A.D. It is therefore the oldest mosque in Sri Lanka. It has undergone several renovations over the years which have considerably altered its original structure. A small pond faces the mosque which is reflected in its waters. The place is particularly photogenic.
