Kande Vihara Temple is one of the most popular religious places in the west of the island. Very close to Bentota, Beruwala, Alutgama and Kalutara, it is visited by many tourists. It dates back to 1734, and was built during the reign of King Rajadhi Rajasinghe. The main temple has beautiful paintings. However, it is the gigantic 48-meter high Buddha statue, built in 2008, that attracts attention when you arrive near the site. Although Kande Vihara means 'temple on the hill', the building is only 11 meters high.

Temple visited by groups because located near cities of seaside tourism! A large statue of Buddha and a rather kitsch decoration…
A very original temple inside: glazed frescoes and gleaming metal staircases.
