The Tissamaharama Rajamaha Viharaya is one of the four major Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka built after the arrival of Arhant Mahinda Thera, the Buddhist monk son of the Emperor Ashoka. It is believed to have been built between the 3rd and 1st centuries BC. Restoration work on the stupa began in 1858 and was completed in 1915. The great white stupa, 47 metres high, is situated in the middle of rice fields and dominates the surrounding area.
