The Kataragama temple is one of the four Hatara Devale in Kandy. The origin of the god Kataragama remains mysterious. Some think that it is the king Mahasena who spread Buddhism in the south of the island after having met Buddha. He was later deified. Others link him to the legend of Kadira, a master spy who fought the Tamil invasion of Elara. For the Hindus, it would be the god Murugan (or Skanda), the god of War and one of the sons of Shiva, but also one of the four protective deities of the Tooth relic.
