This temple dates back to the 14th century and was built on top of a rock called Panhalgala. It is the work of a South Indian architect, Satapathi Rayar. He blended Dravidian, Sinhalese and Indo-Chinese styles, giving his work a unique style. It is considered to be one of the best preserved examples of traditional Sinhalese architecture. The temple houses a representation of a seated Buddha in a meditative posture. The top of the temple offers a superb view of the surrounding hills and rice fields.
