A wooden temple built in the 14th century by King Wickramabahu III which is characterized by its magnificent carvings (nearly 130) and its raised roof. The pillars of the drummers' hall are perfectly preserved and would have been made by the same craftsman. Among the motifs and subjects represented are animals, dancers, mermaids, soldiers, flowers... The roof of the temple is unique in Sri Lanka: its rafters are fixed and assembled by a madol kurupawa, a system not found anywhere else in the country.
