This cemetery, on the banks of the Mahaweli Ganga, is one of six Commonwealth cemeteries in Sri Lanka (four in Colombo, one in Kandy and one in Trincomalee). Of the 201 graves, 196 are those of victims of the 1939-1945 conflict. Not to be confused with the British Garrison Cemetery, located next to the Temple of the Tooth, which contains the remains of nearly 150 British who died in the early 19th century of old age, disease or war.
