This rock which overhangs Kurunegala and cuts the city in two offers a unique panorama on the city and the surroundings. It is even the rock that gave its name to the town. In Sinhalese, kurune means elephant's tusk and gala means rock. It is reached by a road of about 1.5 km from Wathhimi Road. There is the Athugala Viharaya Temple, a communication tower of Sri Lanka Telecom and a huge statue of Buddha. This statue, inaugurated in 2003 after twenty months of work, is 27 meters high.
