Located on a hilltop, this gigantic stupa (or dagoba) was started by King ParakramabahuI (1153-1186). For some unknown reason, the monarch did not complete it and a small dagoba was later built on top of the unfinished structure. Had it been completed, the final dagoba would have been the highest in the world (183 m), and it is said that the king even wanted it to be visible from India! Today, this stupa is only a large hill invaded by trees. This site is not easily accessible and its visit is optional.
