Thivanka means "three-flexed" because of the position of the Buddha in this beautiful building with its fully carved outer walls. The Buddha was originally 8 meters high, but everything above his head has now disappeared. The interior of the temple was entirely decorated with frescoes, some of which remain to form a remarkable and unique ensemble in Polonnaruwa. They depict the legends of Jataka. The temple is under renovation and has been covered with a corrugated iron roof to protect it.
