The Pabalu Vihara is a small shrine that probably dates from the reign of Parakramabahu I. Pabalu means beads, as do the many glass beads found during its excavation. Marks attest to successive destructions, probably the result of invasions and treasure plunderers. The originality of this stupa is that it has 9 sanctuaries housing Buddha statues. The disparity between all these idols suggests that they were added over time. The stupa includes a flight of steps which allows to reach its first level.
