The Rankoth Vehera (Golden Pinnacle) is a 55 m high stupa: it is one of the most imposing in the whole country. It dates from the time of King Nissanka Malla. Its base has a diameter of 170 meters. It rests on a vast brick terrace surrounded by a wall. The king supervised the construction and used to recollect himself from a platform installed in a corner of the terrace. The Gopala Pabbata is a group of four caves located to the north of the Rankoth Vehera. It marks the southern boundary of the site. Inscriptions have been found at the site, dating from the 2nd century BC.
