Built from 276 B.C., it is not only the oldest stupa of the city, but also of the whole country. It was built, it is said, to preserve a clavicle of Buddha. Its original "rice-pile" shape has been replaced by a bell-shaped silhouette after restoration in the 19th century. It marks the introduction of Theravada Buddhism on the island and was built at the request of King Devanampiyatissa. The name Thuparamaya comes from the combination of the words stupa, and aramaya, the name of a residence for monks.
