This palace would have been built in 1076 for the celebrations related to the victory of King Vijayabahu I over the Cholas of South India. Nothing remains of the citadel and little of the royal palace. There is the Mahapali refectory and, quite close, the Dalada Maligawa. The latter could have been the first to receive the sacred tooth of Buddha before it went to the monastery of Abhayagiri. Vijayabahu I is however the king who sounded the death knell of Anuradhapura, because it is him who made move the capital of the Kingdom of Lanka to Polonnaruwa.
