Built at Puliyanthivu Point by the Portuguese in 1628, Batticaloa Fort became the first fort taken by the Dutch in 1638. It is partially occupied by the army and various administrations. It has a structure of four bastions and is protected by the Batticaloa Lagoon on two sides and by a canal on the other two. Its visit has so far little interest. On the other hand, its ramparts seen from the outside are of undeniable charm. At the entrance, one can see the emblem of the Dutch East India Company.
