The Batticaloa Gate stands on the site of the city's former harbor docks at the end of Mahathma Gandhi Park, a public promenade opened in 2013. The gate commemorates the arrival of the first Methodist missionaries in Batticaloa in 1814. Not far away is the statue of Reverend William Ault, who was the first of these missionaries to land here. The Batticaloa Gate is one of the few historical remains on the island of Puliyanthivu.
