This monastic complex is located in the heart of an area that once belonged to the Digamadulla kingdom (4th century BC). Discovered in 1964, the site owes its current importance to the discovery of a casket containing relics of Buddha and two of his disciples. These relics are now kept in a dagoba built in 1974 on top of the rocks. The area around the complex also has some interesting remains. Below the rocks, one can see the troglodyte dwellings of the dozen or so monks who occupy the site.
