ABUELAS DE PLAZA DE MAYO
This non-governmental organization, founded in 1977, aims to locate and return to their families all children abducted or disappeared under the military dictatorship (1976-1983), but also to create the appropriate conditions for the recurrence of such events again. About 500 babies were stolen from their mothers under the dictatorship to be adopted by families close to the regime. The film The official Story of Luis Puenzo, released in 1985, shows this organized baby theft system. The struggle of these grandmothers and genetic research has thus far identified 115 of the 500 stolen babies. The president of the organization, Estela de Carlotto, received the UN human Rights prize in 2003.
