AVENIDA 9 DE JULIO
The widest avenue in the world, with green spaces, named in memory of Argentina's independence day, July 9, 1816
The Porteños can boast of having the widest avenue in the world (140 m) that crosses the capital from north to south. Two rows of manzanas (blocks) had to be razed to create Avenida 9 de Julio, named in memory of Argentina's Independence Day on July 9, 1816. The green spaces along the avenue were designed by the French landscaper Charles Thays. At the intersection with Avenida Corrientes and Avenida Presidente Roque Sáenz Peña you will come across the Plaza de la República, dominated by its famous Obelisk.
