AVENIDA DE MAYO
A beautiful avenue in the city, designated a Lugar Histórico Nacional in 1997, bordered on one side by the Cabildo and on the other by City Hall
Much narrower than the impressive Avenida 9 de Julio, which it crosses, the Avenida de Mayo would be in a way "the Champs-Elysées of Buenos Aires", the most beautiful avenue in the city. Inaugurated in July 1894, this avenue in the Monserrat district has been classified Lugar Histórico Nacional since 1997, forbidding any alteration of the facades and any advertising or construction compromising its architectural heritage. It is often compared to the Parisian avenues with its Haussmann-style, neo-classical and Art Nouveau buildings. Bordered by buildings with Parisian-inspired architecture and lined with cafés, theatres and associations founded by Spanish immigrants, it is more like the Gran Vía de Madrid, one of the largest avenues in the Iberian capital. Linking the famous Plaza de Mayo to the Plaza del Congreso for almost a kilometre and a half, it is the link between the seat of the executive power (the Casa Rosada) and the legislative power (the Palacio del Congreso de la Nación Argentina) of the Argentine Republic. No wonder that most events take place along this avenue! At the level of the Plaza de Mayo, the artery is bordered on one side by the Cabildo and the City Hall on the other. The next stop is the prestigious Café Tortoni, Argentina's most famous café, before crossing the huge Avenida 9 de Julio. We will pass by the lyrical Teatro Avenida, then the Palacio Barolo before arriving at the Plaza del Congreso.
