CALLE LANÍN
Pleasant to explore and much less touristy than the Caminito, Lanín Street, nicknamed the street of a thousand colours, is one of Buenos Aires' hidden little treasures. Count on a half-hour walk from La Boca to discover it in the Barracas district. This street has the particularity of being an urban work of art and is one of the capital's permanent art samples. This project is the original idea of Marino Santa María, a local visual artist: his house and studio are located at number 33 on the street! Marino had the idea of painting the 35 residential fronts in Lanín Street in order to make art accessible to all and to bring colour and good humour to the neighbourhood. What more could you ask for? Thanks to numerous grants and agreements, including those of UNESCO, the Fundación del Banco Ciudad de Buenos Aires, the Secretaría de Cultura de la ciudad, the Organización de Estados Iberoamericanos para la Educación, la Ciencia y la Cultura and the Corporación Buenos Aires Sur, the project was launched in April 2001. For two years, some inhabitants put their hands to the brush and it will be more than twenty people who will let their creative spirit speak for themselves on the 300 meters of this short and narrow street. The only rule is that the paintings must be in harmony and consistent with the architectural style of the houses. The latter have become the real icons of the district... just like Marino Santa María who is enjoying happy days while pursuing his collective art projects! A word of advice: don't venture there in the late afternoon and at night, prefer the morning!
