CALLE LANÍN
Lanín Street in Buenos Aires, featuring paintings in harmony and coherence with the architectural style of the houses
Pleasant to explore and much less touristy than Caminito, Calle Lanín, nicknamed the Street of a Thousand Colors, is one of Buenos Aires' hidden treasures. Allow half an hour's walk from La Boca to discover it in the Barracas district. This street has the particularity of being a work of urban art, and is one of the capital's permanent art samples. The project is the brainchild of Marino Santa María, a local visual artist whose home and studio are located at number 33! Marino came up with the idea of painting the 35 shopfronts on Calle Lanín, to make art accessible to all and bring color and good cheer to the neighborhood. What more could you ask for? Thanks to numerous grants and agreements, including those from UNESCO, the Fundación del Banco Ciudad de Buenos Aires, the Secretaría de Cultura de la ciudad, the Organización de Estados Iberoamericanos para la Educación, la Ciencia y la Cultura and Corporación Buenos Aires Sur, the project was inaugurated in April 2001. Over the next two years, a number of local residents put their paintbrushes to work, and in all, more than twenty people let their creative spirit express itself along the 300-metre stretch of this short, narrow street. The only rule: the paintings must be in harmony with the architectural style of the houses. These houses have become veritable icons of the neighborhood... just like Marino Santa María, who lives happily ever after with his collective art projects!
