CENTRO CULTURAL KIRCHNER (CCK)
Kirchner Cultural Centre, housed in the former Buenos Aires Central Post Office, with numerous rooms dedicated to culture
This space of more than 100,000 m² is dedicated to culture (shows, exhibitions, plastic arts). It has been fitted out in the former central post office, a splendid classical example of the architecture of 19th and 20th century French academism inaugurated in 1928. The Kirchner Cultural Centre opened its doors in September 2015 and has a very large number of rooms. Following the election of Mauricio Macri, the centre was closed for many months, causing strong controversy. It had to reopen under a different name and with a different staff, as it was the showcase of Cristina Kirchner's power, which was not to the liking of Macri's supporters. In May 2016 the cultural centre reopens keeping its name (for the time being) but some modifications take place. For example, the works of art in the "Experiencia Néstor Kirchner" room, all to the glory of the former president, have been completely tidied up and temporary exhibitions on various historical leaders of the country now follow one another.
La Ballena Azul. The impressive symphonic auditorium called "la Ballena Azul" (the blue whale), suspended in the middle of the centre and whose curves are reminiscent of the cetacean that crosses off the coast of Puerto Madryn, is undoubtedly the centrepiece of the cultural centre. With a capacity of 1,950 seats, excellent acoustics and a modern organ with nearly 3,600 pipes, the hall is the seat of the national symphony orchestra. For the programme, please visit the website.
