DOMINGO FAUSTINO SARMIENTO CULTURAL CENTER
Kirchner Cultural Centre, housed in the former Buenos Aires Central Post Office, with numerous rooms dedicated to culture
This 100,000 m² space is dedicated to culture (shows, exhibitions, visual arts). It is housed in the former central post office, a splendid classic example of 19th- and 20th-century French academic architecture inaugurated in 1928. The Centre Culturel Kirchner opened its doors in September 2015, and boasts a large number of rooms. Following the election of Mauricio Macri, the center was closed for several months, causing considerable controversy. It had to reopen under a different name and with different staff, as it was the showcase of Cristina Kirchner's power, which was not to the liking of Macri's supporters. In May 2016, the cultural center reopened under the same name, but with certain modifications. For example, the works in the "Experiencia Néstor Kirchner" room, dedicated to the former president, have been put away completely, and temporary exhibitions on the country's various historical leaders are now on display. It is now known as the Palacio Libertad.
La Ballena Azul. The impressive symphony auditorium known as "La Ballena Azul" (the blue whale), suspended in the middle of the center and whose curves evoke the cetacean that cruises off the coast of Puerto Madryn, is undoubtedly the centerpiece of the cultural center. With a capacity of 1,950, excellent acoustics and a modern organ with almost 3,600 pipes, the hall is home to the national symphony orchestra.
