MUSEO NACIONAL ESTANCIA JESUÍTICA DE ALTA GRACIA
Museum offering free guided tours every day and hosting Afro-Argentinian commemorations and festivities
This beautiful building was first the residence of Don Juan Nieto, granted by Jerónimo Cabrera the Conquistador in gratitude for his services. The heir, Don Alonso Nieto de Herrera, entered the Society of Jesus and offered him the property in 1643. The mule trade and textile production then become the two main activities. Today we can see the church (designed in Baroque style by Andrés Blanqui and whose façade has the peculiarity of not having towers), the residence and its patios, the ranchería (about 60 rooms), the ruins of the mill and the old kiln. The house was occupied by the descendants of Don Juan Manuel Solares (who bought it from Don Santiago Liniers, former Viceroy of La Plata) until 1968, before it was converted into the National Museum (objects that belonged to Liniers, instruments and tools of the period...). It should be noted that some of the buildings are now used for other activities: there is a high school, an entertainment centre, and several districts of the city were built on the former lands of the Jesuit estancia.
There are regular events in the museum, such as concerts. In November, the museum hosts commemorations and festivities for the month of Afro-Argentines. Free guided tours, in Spanish, every day at 11:30 am, 2 pm and 6 pm. If you require another language, please contact the museum staff in advance.
