PLAZA 25 DE MAYO
A refurbished, tree-lined square in the heart of a desert region, perfect for sheltering from the scorching Rioja sun
An oasis in the heart of a desert region, the square marks the very spot where the town was founded in 1591 by Juan Ramírez de Velasco. In colonial times, the square was an open space used for military and religious ceremonies. Devastated by the earthquake of 1894, it was redeveloped with the construction of its main buildings, such as the church of San Nicolás de Bari and the Government Palace. It was also at this time that the trees were planted, under which today you can take shelter from the scorching Rioja sun.
