PLAZA 25 DE MAYO
A refurbished, tree-lined square in the heart of a desert region, perfect for sheltering from the scorching Rioja sun
An oasis in the heart of a desert region, the square marks the very spot where the city was founded in 1591 by Juan Ramírez de Velasco. At the time of colonization, the square was an open space for military or religious ceremonies. Devastated by the earthquake of 1894, it was redeveloped with the construction of its main buildings such as the Church of San Nicolás de Bari and the Government Palace. It was also at that time that it was embellished with the trees under which you can, today, shelter from the burning sun of La Rioja.
