San Miguel de Tucumán, often referred to as Tucumán, is a city in Argentina and the capital of Tucumán province, as well as being the most important city in northern Argentina. Situated in the north-west of the country, 1,086 km north-west of Buenos Aires, it is built on the edge of the Aconquija mountains, the easternmost mountain range before the broad chaco-pampéan plains. The city lies on the west bank of the Río Salí-Dulce and is surrounded by the Sierra de San Javier. San Miguel de Tucumán is the economic center of an irrigated region that produces large quantities of sugar cane, rice, tobacco and fruit, earning it the nickname "El Jardín de la República" (The Garden of the Republic). The city boasts a rich architectural and cultural heritage, with monuments such as the Cathedral of San Miguel de Tucumán and the Church of San Francisco. It also boasts two universities, the Universidad Nacional de Tucumán and the Universidad del Norte Santo Tomás d'Aquino.
