MONUMENTO A GÜEMES
Huge bronze statue 25 m high atop a mound of rock, paying tribute to the famous general Martin Miguel Güemes
At the foot of the Cerro Bernardo and at the end of Paseo Güemes, a huge bronze statue pays homage to the famous General Martin Miguel Güemes, a gaucho hero of the province of Salta. Fallen from his horse following a bullet wound in the same place, he died a few days later at the Glen Horqueta, 37 km from Salta. The monument was inaugurated on 20 February 1931. It is 25 m high and stands at the top of a mound of rocks from the Cerro Bernardo. The reliefs on the base represent the gaucho resistance against the Spanish crown.
