Devil's Gorge with a waterfall in the middle of the Tilcara desert, ideal for a pleasant excursion on foot or by car
The nice excursion is possible on foot or by car (but not just any way, be careful, the path is very stony). From La Pucara, after crossing the bridge again, take the path on the right called "chemin de l'Usine". In the past, Tilcara produced its own electricity, nowadays all Quebrada is supplied by the Jujuy factory. So we pass the old Tilcara factory. There is a fork in the road on the right... This is where the path starts if you want to walk the 6 kilometres. Walkers, try not to miss this path, otherwise you will pass cars and be covered with dust. You will cross a small river. For people in vehicles, continue on this path, which can sometimes be scary, but don't worry. The Devil's Gorge is named after a steep precipice, a waterfall in the middle of the desert. A small dam diverts the river's current and filters it to supply the village with drinking water. You may see mounds of stones on the road. During a ceremony dedicated to the Pachamama (Mother Earth), she must be fed and therefore these offerings must be made to her. This cult, inherited from the Incas, is still very much alive. The walk can still continue on foot or by road to the Alfarcito: a kind of plain where the Indians' terraced crops were installed. You will see the traces of the stone walls, built to protect the crops from the wind. Some families still live there, in complete isolation.
