Carnival merging Christian rites and Andean beliefs: come and celebrate the Pachamama in one of the most beautiful regions of the country.
This great popular celebration takes place 40 days before Easter in all the villages of the Humahuaca quebrada. The Carnival, imported by the Spaniards, has merged with the rituals of the indigenous communities. During eight days of excitement, the inhabitants celebrate the Pachamama, the Mother Earth. Dressed in colorful costumes, the crowd first digs up the "diablo", symbolizing the sun, which is responsible for fertilizing the earth. Then, the processions of comparsas (troops) leave to drink from place to place with strong Andean music and fireworks.
