NOTRE-DAME-DU-PORT CHURCH
Church with four strangely arranged chapels, one of which contains the statue of a Virgin nursing in Clermont-Ferrand.
The Notre-Dame-du-Port basilica is one of Clermont-Ferrand's most emblematic heritage sites. Built in the 12th century, it is one of Auvergne's five major Romanesque churches. Since 1998, it has been part of the prestigious Unesco World Heritage list, registered as part of France's Pilgrimage Route to Santiago de Compostela. The starting point of the Via Arverna, it is located in the Port district, which is where the markets are held. Built on a Latin cross plan, its nave is flanked by five large arcades. The church is pierced by two openings: a Romanesque portal topped by a gabled lintel, and a Gothic door in Volvic stone, which at the end of the 15th century opened onto a chapel. Its chevet, composed of four radiating chapels, adopts the pyramidal silhouette of Auvergne Romanesque art. The decoration is particularly rich, combining stone mosaics, billet stringcourses, chipped modillions and sculpted capitals. To admire it from another angle, take advantage of the belvedere in the building opposite (ask for opening times). The bright interior showcases medieval carved capitals and 19th-century stained glass windows. Remarkable works of art are preserved within, such as the early 15th-century Virgin Breastfeeding and Philippe de Champaigne'sAnnunciation. While the crypt is once again accessible, restoration work continues in the sacristy.
