STROLL IN THE HISTORIC HEART OF CLERMONT
Stroll in the historic heart of Clermont-Ferrand offering an opportunity to discover its construction over the centuries.
This walk allows you to discover how the town has been built over the centuries. Strollers who enjoy window-shopping, coffee breaks and detours will enjoy a pleasant half-day. Start at Place de Jaude, in the shadow of the statue of Vercingétorix. Continue along the pedestrian Rue du 11-Novembre to Place Gaillard. Then head for the Halle gourmande Saint-Pierre, via the Salle Gaillard. If it's open, take advantage of its exhibition (free admission). On the other side of the square, the little rue Saint-Pierre runs alongside the charming Renaissance courtyard of the Hôtel Fontfreyde. Then climb rue des Gras to reach the imposing façade of the cathedral. Take the stairs on the left and walk up to the town hall. After passing the Amboise fountain, walk down rue du Port to the Notre-Dame-du-Port basilica. Continue up to rue Pascal, once home to Clermont-Ferrand's notables, and on to place du Terrail. Rue Savaron and Rue Abbé Girard take you across the hill to Place Ballainvilliers and its terraces. You'll find a wealth of street art along the way. If the weather's fine, head for the Jardin Lecoq. Along the way, you'll come across the obelisk, known as the "pyramid" to the people of Clermont-Ferrand. Alternatively, head back to the cathedral via rue de la Treille, then down to the Opera via rue des Chaussetiers or Place Sugny, where the view opens out onto the puy de Dôme.
