Several walks in the park to enjoy the superb sunsets and discover more of the native flora and fauna
One of the best starting points to explore the park is the Huechulafquen lagoon. The shores of the lake are equipped with organized or free campsites. It's up to you to choose your campsite: a soft spot for Bahía Cañicul II, nestled in one of the bays of the lake and offering superb sunsets. The park allows several walks:
In the Huechulafquen Lake area: Ascent to Cerro Chivo (3 hours from Bahía Cañicul); trail to Paimún (3 hours one way from Piedra Mala), from where it is possible to continue to a refuge located at 1,700 m above sea level (5 hours of ascent).
In the Tromen sector: trail to the Chilean border (3 km trail), where one crosses a forest of araucarias; and other more demanding hikes such as the one that leads to Quillén through the valley of Las Magdalenas, over a distance of about 50 km (count two or three days of walking), or the crossing of the Lanín volcano from the eastern slope to Puerto Canoas, at the extreme west of the Huechulafquen lake (two days of walking), or the ascent of the Lanín volcano.
Villa Quila Quina sector: small interpretive trails, where you can learn more about the native flora and fauna.
Lácar-Queñi sector: Arrayan circuit, 22 km long (with superb views of Lake Lácar and the surrounding peaks), or a 4 km walk from San Martín to Playa Catritre, where it is possible to camp and enjoy a variety of water sports.
